A Christmas message from Councilor Martin Barker

Cllr Martin Barker, Cheshire West and Chester Town Council Member for Parkgate, shares her Christmas message with readers of AboutMyArea.

As 2021 draws to a close, I think it would be fair to say that it has been another difficult year, albeit slightly better than last year, mainly thanks to the rollout of the vaccine. In January, along with many other local volunteers organized by Gareth Prytherch, director of our local charity Neston Community and Youth Center (NCYC), I remember helping out at the COVID vaccination center at Neston Medical Center and felt the hope and expectation that soon everything will be back to normal. I am saddened that we are not quite here yet, but I have high hopes for the New Year.

Despite the challenges, it was encouraging to see our many independent local businesses finally being able to open their doors during the year. For the hospitality industry this has proven to be very difficult, but despite this it is encouraging to see major new investments in The Red Lion and The Ship Hotel in Parkgate. We also saw the introduction of new planters and the parklet which helped bring new dynamism to the region and I wish all of our local businesses a prosperous and successful New Year.

The Christmas lights coming on was a big success and it was so nice to see so many people attending the event. Our thanks go to the Neston City Council for the funding, to Hip and Harmony CIC for going out of their way to make this happen, and to the NCYC for hosting the lantern workshops and stewards. In August, we saw the return of West Vale Fun Day and also, a family-friendly community event hosted by Jimjamsgifts at Stanney Fields Park. Both of these events were very well attended and it is wonderful to see so many members of our community being able to come together outside. Sadly, it was just too early to celebrate Ladies Club Day and Neston Village Fair, but fingers crossed will be back in 2022 with the hope of plenty of street parties in the jubilee year.

I would like to give a special mention to our local community groups including Friends of West Vale, Flint Meadow, Park Fields, Parkgate Community Spirit Group, Parkgate Society and Neston Civic Society, all of whom work tirelessly throughout the year. to help keep our region special and protect our heritage, we are fortunate to have them.

In closing I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I urge you all to stay safe, continue to care for each other and stay positive.
