The best restaurant shares its plans for a luxury hotel in Cardiff city center

The company behind two of Cardiff’s best restaurants has released plans for its first boutique hotel in the city centre.

Group 44, which also owns the Bar 44 and Asador 44 restaurants, aims to open Parador 44 in June 2022, with construction work expected to start in mid-January.

Located on the upper floors of Asador 44 on Quay Street, Parador 44 will be one of the first luxury boutique hotels in Cardiff city centre. With nine individually decorated rooms with tiled floors and ornate woodwork, other aspects of the hotel will include an Andalusian-inspired outdoor terrace and residents’ lounge with fine wine.

The plans for the hotel were first revealed in March 2021 , when a planning application was submitted to Cardiff Council.

Speaking of the new hotel, Tom Morgan, Group 44 Director, said: “Parador 44 is the culmination of many years of dreaming of opening our very first hotel. We have traveled through Spain since childhood looking for inspiration for the project.

“During our travels, we have often stayed in the paradores found throughout the country. These are, for the most part, incredible historical buildings such as convents or monasteries that have been converted into hotels and managed by the Spanish state to facilitate the upkeep of these important historical buildings. The vision is to provide an oasis of modern Spanish comfort in the city centre.

“Guests can enjoy 44’s famous Spanish food, drink and hospitality at Asador 44 on the ground floor of the hotel and around the corner from Bar 44 tapas bar.”

Parador 44 will be the fourth brand to join the award-winning 44 group. Brothers Owen and Tom Morgan opened their first Bar 44 tapas bar in Cowbridge 20 years ago and there are now branches in Cardiff, Penarth and Bristol. In 2017, the brothers also launched Asador 44, a grill restaurant in northern Spain specializing in charcoal-cooked meat and fish.

More recently they opened Mercado 44, an online Spanish food market and in 2021 Owen and Tom published their acclaimed first cookbook, Bar 44 Tapas y Copas, which was named one of the Spanish cookbooks. year of food critic Tom Parker Bowles.
